1.in the poem 'the forsaken' there is a major theme about survival and sacrifice. the beginning starts out with a Chippewa woman and her baby trying to survive a winter journey to their fort. enduring harsh winds and scarcity of food and water.the second part of the poems talks about the same woman who years later has reached her dieing age. it also talks about her nourishing her children when they were children until they became older. in the end this poems clearly describes survival and sacrifice.
2.in the long poem 'the ice floes' has a ironic story that the story sounds like a war throughout most of the poem until the end when it explains it only being seal hunting. the constant talk of violence and killing in a tone that describes a war, harsh and brutal. right until the end we believed the talking of seals was only a term for another definition until they say "twenty thousand seals were killed to help lower the price of bread". the real big twist was this whole poem was about lowering the prices of bread.
3in the poem 'david' the author uses foreshadowing to give a hint about a important event later in the story.he talks about david and the protagonist climbing mountains that have a "ocean of rock that swirles into valleys the moon could be rolled in". This is a subtle foreshadowing of david injury that happens when he slides down and lands in the rocks.throughout the story there are a few also subtle hints about the unfortunate event.
